In 2018, LiteracyPlus conducted the Literature Alive! (Novel) programme for the Primary 4 pupils at Anderson Primary School. Three respective groups of students explored three different novels over the course this engaging programme.

For this school, the three novels that were chosen were Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlotte’s Web and James and the Giant Peach. The programme aims to allow students to understand the elements of a novel such as setting, characterisation and plot as well as to contemplate about the themes presented. These are done through craft activities as well as dramatisation of scenes from the novel.

Novel: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Some of the fun hands-on activities included:

  • designing a Chocolate Factory Board Game as a team
  • completing Job Application Fact Sheets on selected characters as a team
  • dramatisation and portrayal of selected characters or scenes in the novel

Novel: Charlotte’s Web

Some of the fun activities that the students did to explore the novel:

  • creating a spider web using coloured straws to spell out a word and save Wilbur’s life
  • writing an epitaph about a character or a letter from one character to another
  • writing a character acrostic poem
  • dramatisation and portrayal of selected characters or scenes in the novel

Novel: James and the Giant Peach
