Recently, LiteracyPlus was engaged to conduct the Young Explorers’ Holiday Programme for a bunch of delightful children at YWCA Child Development Centre (Outram).

In this thematic holiday programme, children were introduced to a specific theme on each day of the course. Poems, books and short articles were used to provide children with background knowledge about the topic. Other activities included fun art and craft, writing and speech & drama activities. Below are some photos of the kids having a whale of a time in the programme!

Day 1: Walking With Dinosaurs

Activities during the programme included:

  • learning about the different types of dinosaurs
  • using descriptive words to describe dinosaurs
  • presenting a choral recitation
  • making a Stegosaurus spine craft
Day 2: The History of Ice Cream

Activities during the programme included:

  • learning the history of ice cream and types of ice cream
  • presenting a choral recitation
  • designing and colouring their own ice cream
  • making ice cream and eating it!
Day 3: Wild About Bugs!

Activities during the programme included:

  • learning about bugs and insects
  • working on hands-on activities to understand the differences between bugs and insects
  • observing a mealworm and learning about its life cycle
  • examining crickets and caterpillars

At the end of the day, children got to take home a caterpillar and watch it transform into a butterfly!

Day 4: We Are Hungry!

Based on the book The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the Hungry Bear, children would:

  • practise prediction skills and introduced to food-related books
  • participate in a Vocabulary charade on food preparation
  • perform a choral recitation
  • make a bear sandwich on the spot and eat it!
